Shingeki no Kyojin – Attack on Titan

One day in school a couple of my friends were talking about this really cool action packed Anime. “Cool”? “Action Packed”? How come I didn’t know of this awesome show? I head over to and inquire. This is how my journey to the dark and exciting world of Attack on Titan began.

This was back in 2013 when the first season was ongoing. Me and my friends made sure to watch it the day each episode came out so that we can go to school the next day to talk about and discuss our theories. We all wanted to join the Survey Corps and swing around using the 3D-Maneuver gear! Sadly the 25 episodes of season 1 ended in a blink and season 2 was nowhere in sight (It finally aired in 2017). After spending weeks of frustration and desperately avoiding spoilers from the Manga community, I finally decided to read the Manga. This might have been my first or second Manga ever and I was not expecting it to be much good. I mean, how is someone going to portray the breathtaking and dynamic action scenes in drawing! How wrong was I.

The manga immediately trapped me. I couldn’t stop reading until I had caught on to the latest chapter. Granted the drawing isn’t the best and has some rough edges, but the plot and action scenes more than made up for it. Surprisingly, the action scenes were well drawn and portrayed all the dynamics. Having already seen the fights in the Anime, I was able to imagine how the drawings would looks animated. Having caught to the latest chapter, started another grueling wait. New chapters of Shingeki no Kyojin, it being a monthly serialization, came out around the first week of each month. All I can say is that the wait has always been worth it. Each new chapter brought new plot twists, amazing action, raw titan muscles and Levi! Is it just me or Levi killing titans is one of the coolest things out there!!

I have to admit. I have not faithfully read the chapters each month. I sometimes let a few months go by without reading to let the chapters accumulate so that I can savor them in one go. Nevertheless, my love of Shingeki no Kyojin never faltered. It has always been and will always be one of my favorite stories out there. The story also touched some deep philosophical elements of humanity. What is life? What is it’s purpose? War and the fear of unknown. And most importantly how fear of individuals in a community can lead society to discriminate and oppress the entire community. I couldn’t help compare the oppression of the Eldians by the Marleyans to that of the Africans brought over as slaves to work on plantations during the era slave trade. The story of Shingeki no Kyojin also explores the role of family and love in life. Even though it seems naive and foolish from a worldly and logical perspective, we are prepared to sacrifice ourselves for our friends, and family so that they can be happy and live a better life. Ok that is enough sentimental talk. The goal of this post was to simply express my love and gratitude for this beautiful (and bleak) world of Shingeki no Kyojin.

Before I end this post, I have to talk about the music in the Anime. Hands down Attack on Titan has one of the most adrenaline rushing music used. The first opening: Guren no Yumiya by Linked Horizon fits it perfectly. I wish I could sing it more than just this one line, “YAAEGER!”.

Thank you Hajime Isayama for letting us experience Shingeki no Kyojin and its world of Titans. I hope you take a well deserved vacation and relax. I know that being a Mangaka can be stressful and hectic. I hope we all get to enjoy another story by you soon.
